Vegas gambling for fun and profit
It's possible to have a great time in Las Vegas without gambling -- at least that's what we've been told.

You can spend all day sightseeing, shopping, by the pool or at the spa and you can spend all night dining at fine restaurants and partying at the many clubs.

But this isn't Disney World, it's Vegas, and if you're like most people, you're going to want to try your hand at one or more games of chance.

Here are some tips from a veteran gambler that should make your gambling experience more pleasant and maybe even profitable.

Don't play games you don't understand

Playing with real money while you're learning how to gamble can  add up to some very expensive tuition in the school of life.

Most casinos offer free gambling lessons for table games like craps, roulette and blackjack. Some hotels even broadcast lessons over the TVs in the rooms.

Gambling tip: The easier a game is to learn (i.e. keno, slots, roulette), the higher the house edge. Poker, blackjack and craps are more complicated, but they offer the best chance of winning if they're played correctly.

There are thousands of books, videos and DVDs available to teach you the basics of any game as well as advanced strategy.

The Internet also is full of gambling how-to information, including casino and sportsbook betting guides on this site. And most online casinos will let you practice for free.

Slots tip: Avoid the slot machines at the airport and in convenience stores and other non-casino locations -- they're traditionally stingy with payoffs.

Don't risk money you can't afford to lose

Unless you make your living as a professional gambler, you should treat any gambling you do in Vegas as recreation or entertainment.

When you go to the movies, you don't expect to leave with more money than you came in with and you should visit a casino with the same expectations.

If you're gambling with money you can't afford to lose, you're almost guaranteed to lose it.

If you do leave a casino with more money than you came in with, consider yourself very lucky and be sure to put aside some of your winnings. There's nothing worse than losing money you've won back to the casino.

Friends don't let friends gamble drunk

The casinos will give you all the free drinks you want while you're gambling.

But as painful as it is to pass up free booze, our gambling expert sticks to bottled water and diet soda when he's playing.

The reason should be obvious -- you need full control of all your faculties and emotions when you're gambling. Otherwise, those "free" drinks could turn out to be very expensive.

By the same token, you shouldn't gamble if you're depressed, lonely, angry or under any kind of emotional stress.
